As established in Yu Yu Hakusho, there are many different types of demons. In this RP, the different characters (both canon and noncanon) are sorted into one of five groups, in a sort of social hierarchal order: Kami, Mixed, Elemental, Animal, and Monster.
Kami is the most highly regarded type of demon. Although a demon is not limited by his or her type, those in the Kami order are often the most powerful. Many of them can easily disguise themselves among humans, but how close their biology is to a human's is different on an individual level. These demons use energy-based attacks, almost without exception, but they are also best at manipulating objects, or even time and space itself. They do not have official subtypes, although they sometimes like to classify themselves based on whatever way they best manipulate energy. Raizen, Mukuro, and Yusuke Urameshi (once he became a demon) are all Kami-order. They are typically mammals, although it can vary. All demons are capable of eating humans; however, the inability to eat anything else is rare and is found only in the Kami order (such as in the case of Raizen). It's worth noting that although kitsunes are technically animal-type demons, they're actually recognized in the Kami order because kitsunes are so valued in their society. On this forum, characters in the Kami order are silver. Examples include Youko Kurama , The Beautiful Suzuki , and Evee Icey .
Mixed is the second-highest on the demon social ladder, due to both rarity and variety. When two different types have a child (most commonly animal/elemental), the possibilities are endless, which is why they're seen as so special. Whether there are any canon mixed types is hard to say, because sometimes one type is more dominant than the other. Part-kitsunes are sorted into the Kami order with their full kitsune counterparts, but any other kind goes into the Mixed category. Mixed demons will have at least one subtype, but, as they are unique, this will depend on their ancestry. They will often have two subtypes, depending on ancestry. One example on this forum is Moeru . Although her kitsune ancestry places her squarely in the Kami order, she's a product of animal/elemental, with the powers of fire. Her subtype is Fox/Fire. Mixed demons are fun characters to create because of the endless possibilities. On this forum, characters in the Mixed order are dark blue (not to be confused with admin, which are light blue). Examples include Cain (animal/monster), Jacques Chardelli (Kami/human), and Bella (elemental/animal).
Elemental is perhaps the second most common type of demon, yet held in higher esteem than Animal and Monster due to their mystic abilities to control the elements. There are countless canon elementals, from the Shinobi (who each had an elemental specialty) to the Koorime (ice) to our beloved Hiei (fire). Elemental demons always have a subtype, and this is whatever element they control. They can only control one element, inherited from one of their parents or perhaps a grandparent or even a great-grandparent, with that particular elemental ability skipping a generation or two. However, this is uncommon, and powers generally mirror that of one of the parents. They can have recessive traits (such as Hiei being resistant to ice and possibly being able to produce Hiruseki stones), but have not been known to harness the abilities themselves (hence why Hiei can't manipulate ice). Their bodies are also the most similar to humans biologically, and although they can have unusual hair or eye colors (common) or sometimes features like horns or very sharp claws (less common), they usually do not have trouble disguising themselves if they so please. Like all demons, they are capable of eating humans, but due to the similarities in their anatomy, it can cause indigestion and most elementals will seek other sources of food rather than deal with the inconvenience. Demon infants in most orders cannot tolerate Ningenkai food and either survive on demon milk from the mother or food native to Makai; however, elemental babies are unique in that they can consume Ningenkai food without being instantly poisoned. Instead, they merely suffer stomach upset until about a year of age. Elemental demons do not have animal parts such as ears or tails. They are all mammals (primates, to be exact), without exception. On this forum, characters in the Elemental order are green. Examples include Masaki Minamino , Touya , and Jaganshi Hiei .
Animal types are relatively straightforward. Although they are not animals, they do often take on many of the characteristics of whatever their animal subtype is (for example, Kuronue's subtype would be bat, while Yomi's would be goat). They are sometimes looked down upon by Elementals and Kami because their ways of living are different than most demons', closer to their animal roots. You wouldn't see elementals living in dens or giving birth to litters, but animal types certainly would! They also tend to stick with their packs, living in tight-knit communities and villages, compared to the more nomadic, individualistic Elemental (Koorime are an exception to this). Animal types also tend to have elemental powers (though not always), this isn't the focal point of their identity. Their animal connection is, and they proudly celebrate it, never concerned by what others think of them (one explanation for their tendency toward community). As stated by Koenma, plant manipulation powers are more common among animal types than other types, even elementals; that is, pure elemental plant users are uncommon and most are animal spirits first and foremost. Naturally, animal biology differs wildly depending on what their subtype is, but very rarely can they disguise themselves as humans. They are most commonly primates, amphibians, or avians, but this can vary wildly. Sometimes their "order" in the animal kingdom does not match with their "order" as a demon (for example, an actual dog is a canine, but a dog demon would likely be a primate). However, they all can take on a completely animal form, different than their more humanoid demon form, as observed with Kurama. These are different than actual demon wildlife, the non-demons but demonic species that roam Makai and are often hunted for food, though bones are often used for tools and weapons (such as Shigure's sword). On this forum, characters in the Animal order are dark purple (not to be confused with moderators, who are light purple). Examples include Yomi and Shura .
Monster type is likely the most common type, and on the lowest social rung in the world of demons. Not much can be said for them but that they differ quite a bit in terms of the way they look. They are not known to have elemental or energy-based powers, but they rely on their fists, claws, and teeth instead, as well as learned abilities such as swordsmanship. (This can often prove effective.) They cannot disguise themselves as human, almost without exception. They cannot be classified in terms of the Ningenkai animal kingdom, as they are native to Makai only. There are no examples of Monster types yet on this forum, but they are orange.
Note that there are also Human Psychics and Ordinary Humans. (An example of a psychic human would be Genkai, while an ordinary one would be Keiko.) On this forum, human psychics are pink. Our one example is Hana Kuwabara Minamino . There are no examples of ordinary humans yet on this forum, but they are red. Also, any demon/human mix is classified as either full demon or full human depending on their powers and energy type. For example, Hana Kuwabara Minamino is a human, pregnant with twins fathered by a demon. The children will technically be half-demon/half-human, but depending on how they harness their energy, they will be either full human or full demon. As for Hana Kuwabara Minamino herself, she is completely human, due to Shizuru being fully human and Botan being in her human form when pregnant. So if you have a human/demon character who harnesses demon energy (such as in the case of Jacques Chardelli ) they will be classified as a demon, but a Mixed type (regardless of what type their demon parent was). The only exception to this is if their demon parent had kitsune ancestry, which will then put them in Kami.
